Case BriefDavid Milch, creator of HBO’s Deadwood, had a new HBO series about a family of dysfunctional California surfers visited by a strange, mysterious man. HBO created its own site for John from Cincinnati but came to WHi to add creative layers that would match the oddball nature of the show. WHi created two “underground” sites: Yostclan.com was built as a fansite for the show’s fictitious Yost family, made to look like it was created by a local surfer in the ‘90s and abandoned in the early ‘00s. It had as many layers as the series, with mysteries and messages to be unlocked by keen users, plus a message board of “nodes,” floating orbs created by visitors containing messages made from available clips, music and pics, Stinkweedusa.com was the “official” site of the surf team referenced in the show, and like any good surf site it contained video bios of the “team,” stills of tasty waves and even Stinkweed merchandise. |
